On 29th November 2025, we were invited to see BOA Group’s production of Cinderella at The Old Rep Theatre, Birmingham.
This year marks a milestone for the BOA Group’s annual Christmas production, celebrating 10 years of producing professional family Christmas shows. Each year features a principal cast of professional local actors alongside an ensemble drawn from BOA Stage and Screen Production Academy and BOA Creative, Digital and Performing Arts Academy. These productions give young people the chance to work alongside industry professionals in a high-pressure environment, whether onstage or backstage, gaining first-hand experience in delivering a large-scale productions. This year’s Cinderella once again demonstrates why the group has been so successful over the past decade.

Directed once again by local Brummie Lorna Laidlaw, following last year’s The Wizard of Oz, the show also features a script developed by Janice Connolly, better known as her comedy alter-ego Mrs Barbara Nice.
The story stays true to the classic fairy tale: Cinderella, mistreated by her wicked stepmother and stepsisters, is helped by her fairy godmother to attend the royal ball, where she meets the prince. After fleeing at midnight and losing a “bedazzled Converse,” the prince begins his search to find her, leading to their happily-ever-after. Performed in Birmingham and bursting with local references, complete with Brummie accents and songs such as the opening number “Good Morning Birmingham”, a witty nod to a well-known musical theatre classic, the show firmly roots itself in the city’s culture.

The production team, made up of professionals from across the country, collaborated seamlessly with the emerging cast and crew. Stephen Abbiss’s lighting design created some striking moments, while Clive Meldrum’s sound design enhanced scenes with musical underscore and playful effects. Ebrahim Nazier’s set and AV design offered an alternative take on the traditional Cinderella world, supported by visuals on a video wall. Leanne Fitchett’s costumes captured the tone of the piece, with the overall design effectively supporting the storytelling. Under the guidance of musical director and choreographer CiCi Howells, the cast performed with confidence, discipline, and energy.
Returning this year, Jaiden Tsang delivered a Cinderella who balanced innocence and determination beautifully. Julie Ann Baker commanded the stage as Baroness Hardup, and it was refreshing to see her shine in a villain role after last year’s Scarecrow. Jordan Laidley returned as Dandini, the prince’s sidekick, bringing comedic moments throughout.
New to this year’s production were the stepsister duo Chloe and Kim, played by Sam Yetunde and Victoria Tew, reimagined as social media influencers. In their matching yellow and pink outfits, Yetunde and Tewdelivered excellent comedic timing and a well-crafted double act. Stefen Davis’ Prince had a genuinely charming presence, while Therese Collins’ Fairy Godmother was a lovable guide who popped up throughout the show to steer the audience through the story.

The production shone thanks to its ensemble, made up of budding performers, many not dancers by trade. They handled choreography inspired by TikTok trends and seamless scene transitions with maturity and notable physicality. The show also included several magical moments brought to life through the pure magic of theatre, adding that extra layer of family pantomime enchantment that audiences look forward to each Christmas.

Considering the age and experience level of many of the cast and crew, it’s clear that everyone involved has a bright future in theatre. The production reflects the team’s enthusiasm and passion. It was also a particularly special moment to see some of my own theatre students taking on roles to support local theatre, adding an extra layer of pride to the afternoon.

Cinderella not only celebrates 10 years of BOA Group productions, but also reaffirms their commitment to nurturing the next generation of theatre professionals. If you’re looking for a heart-warming festive treat, be sure to buy your tickets for this family Christmas pantomime. Playing until December 31st 2025, experience the magic for yourself.
